Packing for a Move: What to Keep and What to Toss

Ask yourself this: Have I used this item in the last year? Have I even seen this item in the last year? If you answer ‘no’ to these questions, then that’s a tell-tale sign to keep it out of the moving boxes. Here are a few more tips to help you decide what should go to the new house with you and what should be left behind! Two young women packing for a move

Is the item significant or is it replaceable?

There are some things you will come across that may not serve a daily purpose to you, but hold a meaningful place in your heart, like a family photo album. These are the items that you can hold onto for safe-keeping. On the other hand, items that are easily replaceable might be the ones to toss, especially if you haven’t found a use for them in a while.

Basic essentials vs. unnecessary clutter

Some necessities that you’ll want to take to the new house with you include electronics and appliances that are not already at your new place and items that are valuable to you. Clutter that won’t be worth your time or money to move include perishable foods, excessive items that you have multiples of and the mountain of magazines you’ve hoarded with your favorite actors on the cover. The clothes that you desperately want to believe that you’ll wear again someday might be better off in a donation box.

No excuses allowed when packing

You’ll run into a lot of “but what if” situations trying to conjure up a reason to keep said items, but you have to keep in mind that getting rid of these things now will save you time and space in the future. I always say, the less you have to pack, the less you have to move!
